A Look into the Future: 1 in 5 Businesses Will Ditch IT Assets by 2012 By 2012, 20% of businesses will be cloud based with no physical IT assets, according to Gartner, a world leader in information technology research and advisory services. The research house attributes this trend to several driving forces, including virtualization, cloud-enabled (Web-based) services and employees running personal desktops and notebook systems on corporate networks. So what does this mean for your business? As your organization makes plans to navigate the economic recovery and prepare for the return to growth, there will be a significant turn in the power of IT.
'The need for computing hardware, either in a data center or on an employee's desk, will not go away,' Gartner said. 'However, if the ownership of hardware shifts to third parties, then there will be major shifts throughout every facet of the IT hardware industry. For example, enterprise IT budgets will either be shrunk or reallocated to more-strategic projects; enterprise IT staff will either be reduced or reskilled to meet new requirements, and/or hardware distribution will have to change radically to meet the requirements of the new IT hardware buying points.' If this prediction is true, we are at the beginning of an explosion in cloud-based services managed. Businesses will need trusted providers to offer various services on behalf of the enterprise. Of course, not all businesses will be able to take this road, but a substantial number of industries can and will. More information about Gartner's predictions can be found on the Gartner Predicts Web site at www.gartner.com/predicts.

Case Study: Friendswood ISD In the Friendswood High School library, students had access to applications, Internet browsers and the library database on desktop PCs. The only problem was they tended to mess with the computers' settings, forcing the librarian to monitor each computer constantly. To solve the problem, CITOC installed Thin Clients. Perfect for multi-user systems, Thin Clients form a single point of security and maintenance, which eliminates the need to monitor individual computers. The library was able to lower its total cost of ownership and prevent students from tampering with the computers. 'CITOC was very responsive and our experience with the engineer was very impressive. He knew what he was doing and explained everything in layman's terms so we were able to understand.' - Friendswood Independent School District Librarian, Pat Torrefranca
